Cantabrian streams and rivers run through an inhomogeneous geological substrate. When they flow through, an outcrop of hard limestone, the erosion which is exerted by the river and other factors, triggers the formation of gorges and canyons, such as Pincuejo’s, in Caldas de Luna.
The conditions prevailing within this gorge, one of the narrowest in the province of León, are extreme. Only a few species of birds are able to survive, for which they develop a set of adaptations that allow them to operate with ease between rocks and to get the limited existing food.
