Sancenas pastures are a karst depression, i.e., they were formed by slow chemical processes of limestone dissolution by water.
Situated at a considerable altitude, the dominant vegetation consists of height scrubland bands and large grasslands, traditionally used by cattle.
They are the perfect habitat for some mountain birds, which specialize in survival in these harsh environments, such as the water pipit and the alpine accentor. Also present is the snowfinch, whose populations are the southwestern distribution limit of this species in Europe.
