About five kilometres south of Riolago de Babia, it is found the Txao Lake, a glacial lagoon that remains under the protection of the Penouta Peak and the Alto de la Cañada. This landscape is a mountain environment, where its altitude limits the growth of trees.
This area is rich in grassland and scrub, which provide shelter and food for gray partridges, mistle thrushes and other birds, characteristic of this type of habitat.
Species also typical of these mountain environments, although linked to grassland dotted with rocky outcrops, are the snowfinch or the alpine accentor.
