Given the need to irrigate the many cultures of the region, neighbours built several irrigation ponds that would ensure water supply during the summer.
Although many of them have succumbed to the passage of time, those of larger dimensions, as Benamarías’ reservoir, still fulfil their original function. This raft is used by some waterfowl such as the mallard and grey heron, prospecting over and over its shores and its bed-raft (bottom) in search of food. Some steppe birds such as the sky lark or the crested lark, frequent the vast unirrigated fields that surround water surface.
