Mixed forest of Caboalles

The steep slopes surrounding Caboalles de Arriba are occupied by a mixed forest of considerable extent. Oaks, birches, maples, rowans, whitebeams, elms and many other species of trees find in these shady slopes an ideal place in which to develop. These mixed forests, which receive their names by the coexistence of several species of trees, none of them will come to dominate over the others.
In these forests the bird community is extensive: forest birds such as the Eurasian jay, the Common Bullfinch, the Short-toed Treecreeper or the European Nuthatch, find in them all kinds of resources. Capercaillie, one of the most iconic and endangered birds of the Cantabrian Mountains, has in them any of their last leks in Laciana Valley.
